World Water Day

Water is essential to life, yet 2.2 billion people around the world still lack access to safe drinking water. World Water Day is a time to reflect on this global challenge and take action. This year’s theme, Glacier Preservation, highlights the urgent need to protect our frozen water sources as glaciers melt at an unprecedented rate due to climate change.
Why glaciers matter
Glaciers are more than just ice - they’re a lifeline. Their meltwater supports drinking water supplies, agriculture, industry, clean energy production, and healthy ecosystems. But as the planet warms, glaciers are disappearing, making the water cycle more unpredictable and extreme.
Did you know?
- Glaciers are melting faster than ever, disrupting water availability and increasing the risk of floods, droughts, and landslides.
- Billions of people depend on glacier-fed water systems for survival.
- Melting glaciers contribute to rising sea levels, threatening coastal communities and ecosystems worldwide.
While Kingston’s water supply comes from Lake Ontario, the impacts of glacier loss are global, affecting weather patterns, freshwater availability, and long-term water security.
Take action for our water
We all have a role to play in protecting water resources, from local conservation efforts to global climate action. This World Water Day, join the movement and commit to:
- Save water: Every drop counts! Fix leaks, take shorter showers, and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing dishes. Explore more water-saving tips
- Prevent pollution: What goes down the drain matters. Keep food waste, fats, oils, greases, medicines, and chemicals out of your plumbing. Learn what should and shouldn't go down the drain
- Support climate action: Small actions add up. Choose energy-efficient appliances, walk or bike when you can, and support policies that cut emissions.
- Learn about your water: The more you know, the more you can do! Find out where your water comes from and how glacier loss affects water security. Start with our Protecting Kingston’s Tap Water webpage.
- Protect nature: Be part of the solution! Plant trees, build a rain garden, or install a rain barrel to manage stormwater and reduce flood risks. Visit our Water Conservation Garden for inspiration.
- Get involved: Take action! Join clean-ups, participate in conservation programs, and spread the word about protecting our water resources. Register now and join us at the Spring Pitch-in community clean-up from April 19 - 27
