Planning to dig on your property? Whether you're planting a tree, building a deck, or installing a pool, it's crucial to locate underground utilities before you start. Damaging these lines can be dangerous and costly. Digging without publicly owned infrastructure locates is against the law!

What to do before you dig

Contact Ontario One Call before digging, even for small projects. They will identify the locate provider for each publicly owned buried utility at no cost. Contact them at least a week before digging, as infrastructure owners have five business days to respond to regular requests.

Ontario One Call is available 24/7. They will request your name, phone number, email address, dig site address (including nearest intersection), and the type of work being done. They will notify public infrastructure owners to locate the buried lines and cables. After receiving a locate or clearance from each infrastructure owner listed in the “members notified” section of your confirmation email, you can dig safely by respecting the marks and following the provided instructions and safe excavation practices.

Important note: When you submit a locate request through Ontario One Call, you may be advised to obtain additional locates for privately owned underground infrastructure.

Understanding public and private underground infrastructure

Examples of public infrastructure (owned and maintained by utility companies)

Examples of private infrastructure  (owned by the property owner)

  • Water service lines from the curb stop to your house
  • Sewer and septic tanks, systems and piping
  • Gas lines to a BBQ or pool heater
  • Electrical lines to sheds or garages
  • Security camera feeds
