Protect your home from spring flooding

Protect your home from spring flooding

Canada’s climate is changing, and we are all feeling the impact - warmer temperatures, heavier rain, and more unpredictable weather. That means more risk of basement flooding, even in homes where it’s never happened before.

If you live in a home with a basement, these tips can help you reduce your risk.

Install or upgrade your sump pump

A sump pump helps move water away from your foundation before it builds up and causes damage. If you live in an older neighbourhood, this is especially important as many older drainage systems simply weren’t designed for today’s extreme weather.

👉 Learn how sump pumps work and what to consider when installing or maintaining one.

Check your eavestroughs and downspouts

Winter can leave behind blockages, breaks, or disconnections. Take time to inspect and clear them out.

Extend your downspouts

They should drain water over your lawn, at least two metres from your home. This helps reduce pooling around your foundation and the risk of water getting in.

Reduce runoff from your property

Use a rain barrel to divert rainwater from the sewer system and help reduce the risk of sewer overflows.  Check out our rain barrel program.

Know what to do if your basement floods

Safety first. Never enter a wet basement unless a qualified professional has confirmed it’s safe.
