The federal carbon charge for natural gas will be eliminated on April 1, 2025

The federal carbon charge for natural gas will be eliminated on April 1, 2025

As part of the federal government’s Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, a carbon pricing program was implemented in Ontario in 2019. The program introduced a carbon charge applied to fossil fuels sold in Ontario, including natural gas. Previously, this charge increased annually each April.

However, on March 15, 2025, the federal government announced amendments to the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act and the Fuel Charge Regulations, eliminating the federal carbon charge for natural gas effective April 1, 2025.

As a result, starting April 1, 2025, the federal carbon charge for natural gas will be reduced to $0.00 per cubic metre, eliminating this charge for residents and businesses. This means that for usage after March 31, your bill will not have federal carbon charges incurred.

For more information on the elimination of the federal carbon charge, visit the Government of Canada website.
