Planning to dig on your property? Click before you dig!

With spring project season around the corner, many of us are itching to get outside and start tackling those backyard projects. Whether it’s digging a new garden, planting a tree, building a fence or a deck, if your project involves digging, here’s a friendly reminder: you need to request a public utility locate.
Utilities Kingston is teaming up with Ontario One Call to help keep your spring projects safe and stress-free. Why? Because gas lines, electrical cables, and water pipes could be buried beneath your lawn or garden. Hitting one of those by accident could cause costly repairs, service disruptions - or worse - serious injuries.
A quick locate can save you big time
A recent awareness study from Ontario One Call revealed some eye-opening trends:
- 1 in 4 residential digging projects causes accidental damage to underground infrastructure.
- 57% of homeowners don’t realize that a utility locate is legally required before digging.
- Only 33% of homeowners know that Ontario One Call exists and that requesting locates is completely free.
- Even among the pros, 1 in 4 contractors admitted they didn’t request a locate on their last project.
Here’s what to do:
Click before you dig! Visit OntarioOneCall.ca and request a free locate at least five business days before you plan to start digging. Ontario One Call will contact each utility company, and locators will come out to mark the buried lines so you’ll know where it’s safe to work.
