As of January 1, 2017, the Government of Ontario is introducing an eight per cent rebate under the Ontario Rebate for Electricity Consumers Act, 2016 (“The Act”) equal to the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on the bills of residential, farm, small business and other eligible customers. This eight per cent rebate will start to appear on eligible electricity bills that reflect services received on or after January 1, 2017.

Do I need to apply for the rebate?

In most cases, no!

  • Residents and small businesses will be automatically enrolled. The eight per cent provincial rebate will appear as a separate line item on your bill.
  • Bulk-metered, multi-unit residential buildings - such as some apartments and condominiums - that were previously enrolled for the Debt Retirement Charge exemption or the Ontario Clean Energy Benefit will also be automatically enrolled – you do not need to do anything.
  • If you did not qualify for previous electricity exemptions and credits, your account may still be eligible to receive the rebate. You are encouraged to review the rebate eligibility criteria in the form below and determine if you are eligible to apply. If so, you must self-declare your eligibility by completing and submitting the self-declaration form.
