We’re operating fire hydrants in the west end – here’s why!

Starting today, and continuing into next week, you may notice our crews operating fire hydrants along Bayridge Drive north of Front Road, and Front Road west of Sunny Acres Drive.

The project to upgrade the Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant, located in the west end, is nearing completion. The upgrades will increase the plant capacity from 45 million litres per day to 80 million litres per day. As part of final testing, we need to simulate a high demand on the water system so that we can assess performance – that’s where the hydrants come in.

How this will impact the area

Activities on the water distribution system can disturb deposits that normally occur in water pipes. If you notice your tap water is brown or discoloured, please be assured the water is still safe. Flush your pipes until the water is clear again.

  1. Locate the cold water tap that is closest to your water meter.
  2. Run the cold water until it is clear. This may take 5 – 25 minutes.
  3. If the water does not clear, please contact Utilities Kingston at 613-546-1181.

Other impacts:

  • You may also notice temporary reduced water pressure while hydrant flow rating takes place. Once the operators have completed their work, water pressure will return to normal.
  • The locations chosen for operating fire hydrants have good drainage to reduce the likelihood of water pooling in the area.
  • Treated water is de-chlorinated before it is discharged.
