Treated Water Use Outdoors: Restrictions Start June 15

Treated Water Use Outdoors: Restrictions Start June 15

Each summer, the warmer weather is associated with a higher demand on water systems, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.  Restricting our use of treated water outdoors, especially during times when the demand for it is highest, helps to:

  • Ensure potable water reserves, adequate water pressure and fire protection.
  • Manage the need to expand pumping stations and treatment facilities.
  • Reduce run-off pollutants that end up in surrounding bodies of fresh water.

According to provisions of the City of Kingston “Water By-law”, watering restrictions apply annually from June 15 to September 15. You may use outdoor treated water based on your civic address (odds on odd-numbered days, evens on even-numbered days). Remember:

  • Use a hand-held hose, can or bucket any time on your scheduled day
  • Use a sprinkler only between 5 and 10 a.m. on your scheduled day
  • Use water from your rain barrel anytime!

We understand that sometimes new sod, shrubs and trees need water at other times and that’s why we offer exemption permits. Visit our web page on summer outdoor treated water use to learn more about exemption permits, how to conserve water and money, and when you can use outdoor treated water.
