If your basement has flooded

Don’t enter the flooded area until you are told it is safe by a qualified professional. Call a plumber immediately. Our website has helpful information on hazards and what steps to take.

Protect your home from flooding

Heavy rains can put every home at risk of basement flooding, even if it’s never flooded before. Know how to protect your home. Our website offers 21 flood reduction options for homeowners.

There are simple steps you can take to protect your home today, including:

  • Reduce your water use during heavy rains as the sewers fill more quickly. You may wish to delay doing laundry or showering.
  • Ensure your downspouts are safely routed away from your home. According to the “Sewer Use By-law”, they may not be directed into the sanitary sewer.
  • Check that your sump pump and sanitary backwater valve are operating correctly. Conduct regular maintenance, in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. If you know an event is coming, clean your backwater valve.
  • Ensure the catch basins around your home are clear of leaves and debris.
