This Thursday, Learn About the James Street Water Booster Station Upgrades
Attend a public information session about upgrades to the James Street Water Booster Station. This is an opportunity to learn about the project and provide input on the upgrades. The session will take place this Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at La Salle Secondary School.

The James Street Water Booster Station supplies water to the system east of the Cataraqui River and is located in the Barriefield Heritage Conservation District. View a map of the service area

Responsible infrastructure management

A recent review of the Water Master Plan and the completion of an Environmental Assessment resulted in a recommended solution to upgrade and expand the James Street Water Booster Station at its existing location.

The upgrades are needed to replace aging infrastructure and ensure adequate supply of water for the East Water System. The upgraded facility will accommodate 20-year population growth projections.

Utilities Kingston has initiated the detailed design, which includes a building extension to house new pumps, electrical equipment and other associated infrastructure. There will also be minor alterations made to the underground infrastructure outside the building, along with a new standby power generator to ensure continued reliability of the water supply in the event of a power outage.

Design work is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, with construction expected to begin in the summer of 2016.

History of the station

The James Street Water Booster Station was originally constructed in 1956 and was upgraded and expanded in the 1970’s and 1990’s. The currently proposed upgrades at the station involve removing the 1970’s and 1990’s building additions and constructing a new addition on the south side of the original 1956 building.

The James Street Water Booster Station is located in the Barriefield Heritage Conservation District. Its design is compatible with the surrounding buildings in the Barriefield Heritage Conservation District and uses traditional building forms and proportions. The physical appearance will continue to respect the Village of Barriefield Heritage Conservation District Plan.

Impact to services and customers

The existing James Street Water Booster Station is the primary supply of water to the East Water System and will need to maintain service to the east throughout the construction of the upgrades.

The addition will include accommodations required to supply the East Water System with water during the renovation of the existing portion of the station.

Disruptions to residents and customers are expected to be minimal during the duration of the project, and will be communicated in advance.
