Public Meeting April 24 on Water Main Work in Your Neighbourhood

Public Meeting April 24 on Water Main Work in Your Neighbourhood

Utilities Kingston invites you to a public meeting this April 24 on water main work in the areas of Greer Street, Shaw Street, Sutherland Drive and Old Quarry Road.

Project overview

The project involves replacing or installing 1,100 metres of water mains in your neighbourhood. Underground infrastructure can be replaced using a number of methods, often divided into two major areas: conventional open cut and the less disruptive and potentially more cost-effective trenchless (or low/no dig) technologies.

Utilities Kingston is replacing half century old water mains along Greer Street, Shaw Street, and Old Quarry Road (from Portsmouth Avenue to Indian Road) via pipebursting. Pipebursting is a recent trenchless technology that allows new pipe to be installed within an old pipe, while bursting the latter. One benefit of pipebursting is that the new pipe can be one or two sizes larger.

Additionally, new water main will be installed along Sutherland Drive (from Shaw Street to Montreal Street) via a conventional open cut method. This work will take place during the 2014 construction season and is scheduled to start at the end of April. Residents and commuters in the immediate area may notice occasional traffic delays, temporary water service disruptions and disturbance of landscapes, which will be restored after construction.

Utilities Kingston has awarded the $1 million project to Gordon Barr Ltd.
