Natural gas rate review, effective May 1

Natural gas rate review, effective May 1

Utilities Kingston has reviewed the rates for the natural gas commodity and transportation and storage, effective May 1, 2022:

  • The commodity price for natural gas will increase by $0.0457 $/m3 to $0.1978 $/m3, and
  • The transportation and storage price for natural gas will decrease by -$0.0153 $/m3 to $0.0455 $/m3.

The overall effect of the price changes will increase a typical residential bill (2,300 m3 annually) by an estimated $69.92 annually.

The increase to the commodity price relates to the resurgence of the economy (which increased energy demand), inflation affecting all input raw materials, low natural gas storage levels coming out of a cold winter increasing domestic demand, and the war in Ukraine, which is affecting Canadian supply. Customers pay the actual costs for the natural gas commodity, transportation and storage with no mark-up. Neither Utilities Kingston nor the City of Kingston profit from this price increase.

The next quarterly review of these rate components will be for August 1, 2022 implementation. View our natural gas rates page to learn more. Questions can be directed to customer service, by calling 613-546-0000, Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM.
