Is Water Main Relining Coming to Your Neighbourhood?

Is Water Main Relining Coming to Your Neighbourhood?

Utilities Kingston has awarded the contract for water main relining in 2016 to Fer-Pal Construction Ltd. Work is starting in July, and is expected to be completed by the end of October.

Relining water main allows us to rehabilitate aging pipes while minimizing service interruption and nuisance to residents. Instead of digging up the road along the entire length of the watermain, Fer-Pal will excavate ‘pits’ to access the main at strategic locations and work from there.

The relining process involves cleaning the inside of the mains and then inserting a felt liner that is coated with a resin. This resin compound is then cured-in-place to form what is essentially a ‘new pipe within a pipe’.

We’ll also replace aging infrastructure in the area, including water valves and fire hydrants. This helps to ensure the continued safety and reliability of the water distribution system.

The 2016 program involves relining approximately 3,400 metres of watermain, primarily in the residential areas of:

  • Old Hillview Road (from Hillview Road south to the end)
  • Roosevelt Drive (from Vista Drive to Knightsbridge Road)
  • Bernice Drive (from Roosevelt Drive to the south intersection at Carrie Crescent)
  • Carrie Crescent (from the north intersection at Bernice Drive to Renda Street)
  • Hathaway Terrace (from Roosevelt Drive south to the cul-de-sac)
  • Sunny Acres Road (from Front Road to Point Crescent)
  • Point Crescent (from Sunny Acres Road to Keyes Street)

 What to expect

Fer-Pal will distribute notifications to affected homeowners, with a minimum of 48 hours in notice. Project updates will also be available on the projects webpage.

Key points:

  • A temporary potable water supply system (overland) will be provided during the relining activities. We will require access to the dwelling in order to disconnect and reconnect the water meter.
  • While you’re receiving water through a temporary supply, you won’t be billed for water consumption, but the monthly service charge remains in effect.
  • We will require connection to an exterior hose bib (or other connection).
  • Utilities Kingston and contractor staff carry identification. Residents should always ask to see it.
  • If your water meter is reaching the end of its life, we’ll also take the opportunity to replace it.
  • Minor traffic interruptions should be anticipated around access pits and where work is being conducted.
