Human Rights Day is December 10
December 10, 2023, marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).
The Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in Paris in 1948 and is the first legal document to set out the fundamental human rights to be universally protected. It states that each person is entitled to fundamental rights, including the right to equality, and the right to life, liberty, and security of the person. It also recognizes the right to freedom of religion and speech and the right to participate in the cultural life of the community.
The UDHR is a global blueprint for international, national, and local laws and policies and a bedrock of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. It is available in more than 500 languages and is the most translated document in the world.
This year, the theme is: Freedom, Equality and Justice for All. The UDHR calls upon everybody to stand up for human rights. We all have a role to play.
