Emergency Power at Traffic Signals

Emergency Power at Traffic Signals

Our streetlight and traffic signal technicians have completed uninterruptible power supply (UPS) installations at 71 of 200 signalized intersections.

The UPS batteries typically last 4-7 hours, but this can vary depending on the number of signals at the intersection, temperature, battery age and time of day. With the traffic signals at all 200 intersections converted to low energy LED’s, the length of time that batteries can supply emergency power is increased - in some cases, for up to 24 hours. This helps to improve reliability and safety at intersections - particularly those with multiple lanes.

Keeping these intersections functioning well during power outages also serves the city in major emergency situations involving mass evacuations. Learn more about streetlight and traffic signal services.

Safety tip: treat intersections where traffic signals are not functioning as a four-way stop.
