Electricity Conservation During Cold Weather

With the extremely cold weather forecast over the next several days, Utilities Kingston anticipates an increased demand for electricity. We appreciate customers who take steps to conserve their electricity use.

The Kingston Hydro electricity distribution area operated by Utilities Kingston is unique in that demand for electricity peaks in winter. There are a high number of electrically heated homes in Central Kingston. So, when the temperature drops in winter, demand for electricity goes up.

Utility infrastructure is designed to handle the highest peaking demand times. Rather than build more infrastructure, it's more sustainable to reduce demand by conserving electricity use during peak times.

Ways to conserve electricity in winter:

  • Reduce your electricity use during on-peak times when the demand is highest. During Winter months, that’s from 5-7 p.m. and 7-11 a.m. Learn more from the Ontario Energy Board.
  • Set your thermostat to 20°C degrees when you’re home and 18°C degrees overnight or when you’re away. Dress warmly instead of turning up the thermostat.
  • Insulation and air sealing is the most cost effective way to conserve electric heat. Caulk window trim (both on the wall and window frame edge), use plastic window films, put towels down to block drafts below exterior doors, and tape shut exterior doors that are not being used.
  • Keep baseboard heaters clean and unblocked. Turn down the heat in any unused rooms to 15°C.
