7 Ways to Conserve Electricity this Christmas

The holidays are a time to gather and give, feast and be festive. We're sharing a few tips to help you and your loved ones save energy and money when you celebrate the season this year.

  1. Planning to cook and bake over the holidays? Know 10 tips to save energy with kitchen appliances.
  2. Keep your family toasty and warm with 22 heating, insulation and weather stripping tips. Don't forget the hot cocoa and Snuggies!
  3. Replace older, incandescent holiday lights with LEDs. They use just a fraction of the energy, last much longer (no more reaching to replace that one bulb that’s burnt out) and generate less heat for improved safety. Check out other seasonal safety tips from Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority and Utilities Kingston.
  4. Shift your electricity use to off-peak times when it costs less. These include weekends and statutory holidays, as well as 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays. Download the Time-of-use holiday schedule from the Ontario Energy Board.
  5. Leftovers to keep? Make sure your refrigerator and freezer are up to the task. Cleaning and vacuuming cooling coils ensures your fridge and freezer are operating as efficiently as possible. This way your appliances will keep 20 lbs. of your Great Aunt's famous stuffing from spoiling.
  6. Still looking for stocking stuffers? Give the gift of energy efficiency this holiday. Use Kingston Hydro SaveONenergy coupons to save money when you buy your loved ones LED lights, power bars with timers (for their new electronics) and other energy-saving goodies.
  7. Reindeer noses run on renewable energy, generated from the carrots they eat. This Christmas eve, be sure to leave one for Rudolph along with Santa's cookies and 'nog.
