3,500 households to receive Utilities Kingston conservation reports

Utilities Kingston is sending out Powerful InsightsTM reports to 3,500 customers this fall. The reports will help them identify how to conserve energy and save money.

This season, the reports are being mailed to households where electricity and natural gas use rises significantly during the heating season. The reports:

  • Provide a benchmark of last fall’s energy use compared to similar-sized homes.
  • Offer a breakdown of how customers most likely use natural gas and electricity in their homes.
  • Recommend ways to save.

If you're in this group, you will receive two follow-up reports so you can see the benefits of conservation measures you may undertake.

Most of our gas or electricity customers will receive one or more reports between 2016 and 2020.  Each season, these reports are focused on a different group of customers and have tailored messages and conservation offers.

Gas or electricity customers who would like to get reports, but don’t receive a mailing, can opt in online. You must be at your address for at least a year before we have enough information to provide reports.

The goal is to help our customers who use more natural gas and electricity find ways to cut down by offering clear information on their usage. Thanks to our multi-utility model, we are unique in Ontario by offering both gas and electricity-saving opportunities in one report.

This Powerful Insights program was piloted in 2015 and we measured a two per cent drop in energy use amongst the 9,000 households that were sent reports. Collectively, they saved enough energy to power 100 average residential customers for a year.

Customers who are comparing the current report to past ones should be aware that some things have changed:

  • The timeframe, units, and information presented can change with each report you receive.
  • If your report includes information on gas usage, that's new too. Past reports included only electricity-related information.
    • This special edition provides a combined view of your natural gas and electricity use last fall to help you save on heating costs this winter.
    • Your energy use is presented in kilowatt-hour equivalents (kWhe). This combines electricity kWhs and natural gas cubic metres into a single comparable unit of energy. For reference, a typical refrigerator running 10 hours uses 1 kWh.

The Powerful Insights reports offer:

  • A comparison of a customer’s household’s energy use to homes of similar size and heating source.
  • Calculated estimates of how much energy is being used by a customer’s heating and cooling equipment, appliances, lights and electronics.
  • Suggestions, tailored to individual households, for actions customers can take to save energy and money while reducing our community’s impact on the environment.
