Sewer overflow log

Overview

Definitions:

• A sewage or sewer overflow is defined as a discharge of diluted raw sewage from the wastewater collection system.  These can happen at locations in the underground pipe network (the collection system) as well at at pumping and storage facilities.  The tables below differentiate between the two types. 
• A sewer bypass is defined as a discharge of partially treated sewage from a wastewater treatment plant.  Typically, this is caused by a bypass or short circuiting of the secondary treatment process and results in a discharge of blended primary and secondary treated sewage.

Tables 1 and 2 below show the sewage overflow history since the year 2000 for pumping and overflow storage facilities in the City of Kingston.

Tables 3 and 4 show the sewage overflow history since September 2006 for the City's wastewater pipe network. These are sometimes referred to as “CSO” or combined sewer overflows.

Tables 5 and 6 show the bypass history for wastewater treatment plants (WTTP). Bypasses at WTTP can occur at different stages in the process and often result in partial treatment of wastewater rather than the discharge of raw or rain-diluted sewage.

Most recent facility sewage overflow events

Table 1 provides information on the most recent sewage overflow events for facilities, including the volume of each overflow and the precipitation that had fallen at the time of each event. The table is manually updated once a sewer overflow event has ended. Events that are still overflowing will not yet be included.

Table 2 provides a breakdown of the yearly totals of diluted raw sewage. The information from Table 1 is included in the Table 2 data.
