Utilities Kingston website

  • No deposit is required for the proposed installation when the customer signs a gas application. However:

    • If the application was signed between May 1 and November 15, and an appliance is not connected within six months, Utilities Kingston reserves the right to charge up to $1200.00.
    • If the application was signed between November 16 and April 30, and an appliance is not connected within one month, Utilities Kingston reserves the right to charge up to $1500.00.
    • A billing deposit may be required, contact customer service at 613-546-1181, Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • A $15 standard application fee will be applied, which covers the costs to arrange for the gas service. Additionally, a basic monthly service charge will be applied from the date the gas meter is installed.  This charge is used to recover costs associated with utility administration, meter maintenance and other operational costs for each service.

  • The meter can be located on the front (street side) of the house or within three metres of the front corner of the house. If the location is further back than three metres, a charge per additional metre shall be required before the application is processed. There are regulations set out by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), through the code book B149, that must be adhered to when locating the gas meter around any building.

  • It is not necessary to come into the Utilities Kingston office to complete an application form. We suggest you arrange to meet a Utilities Kingston representative at the property to determine the best location for the gas service (meter). To make this arrangement, call 613-546-1181, extension 2285.

  • No it does not. Utilities Kingston installs the service to the customers house (from the gas main to the meter) at no charge, with the exception of issues addressed in this FAQ.

  • Typically, the gas service will be installed eight weeks from the completion of the gas application. The length of time may vary due to fluctuations in demand for new services and seasonal weather conditions.

  • To protect the safety of underground infrastructure, Utilities Kingston staff must arrange for site clearances from their own and other utilities locate staff (telecom, cable, City of Kingston, etc.). When clearances are complete, a layout and material list can be finalized. This information is then forwarded to either Utilities Kingston crews or to an outside contractor.

  • If you have a gas service, with an existing gas appliance connected (such as a furnace, stove, or water heater), you don't need to contact us to install a new appliance.

When a gas service is already in place, contact a TSSA-registered contractor to install the gas appliance. We recommend that you get at least two or three quotes. (Find a registered contractor by calling the TSSA at 1-877-682-8772, or by visiting the Find a Contractor page on their website).
