Promoting Diversity, Equality and Inclusion

Utilities Kingston is committed to building a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce. We value the background, experience, perspective, and talents of each individual and believe that diversity and inclusion are key drivers of creativity, innovation, and sustainability.

A diverse work environment heightens integrity in processes, promotes innovation and supports sound decision making, contributing to our continued success.

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) provide continuous learning opportunities. In 2021, management employees learned about equity and inclusion principles, which began with the implementation of a Utilities Kingston DEI Policy, as well as  an education and training session from a leading facilitator in the field. We developed plans to roll this training out to all employees in 2022.

An anonymous employee survey helped us understand our diversity, equity and inclusion baseline, and a path forward for the future.  The below graphic summarizes the responses of the 116 employees who completed the survey in 2021.

Gender Diversity in the Trades

Utilities Kingston continues to proudly partner with Women of Powerline Technicians to promote gender diversity in the trade. This national, not-for-profit organization is committed to increasing the representation of women in trades and technical roles, in Canada’s electricity sector. Their vision is to see every gender represented on every electricity distributor's operations crew.

At Utilities Kingston, we want to create a community where everyone feels they belong, yet it is well known that women remain underrepresented in technical, engineering and scientific fields.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our colleagues and everyone who contributes to Utilities Kingston!  Learn more about diversity at Utilities Kingston, with our page on International Women's Day 2022.

Honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30, 2021, we honoured the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It is a call to join important conversations and seek education about the truths of Indigenous treaties, First Nation, Inuit and Metis land claims and the residential schools system.

Our employees participated in Orange Shirt Day, which recognizes the harm the residential school system inflicted on the self-esteem and well being of children, and affirms that every child matters.

Recruitment, Selection & Retention

From electricians to GIS technicians, Journeypersons, gas operators and millwrights, certified accountants, professional engineers, and certified human resources professionals – recruitment activities are diverse.

Utilities Kingston attracts and retains the best talent for our organization.  In 2022, 15 employees left our employment through attrition, and we welcomed 19 employees to the organization. Additionally, we offered six employee’s new opportunities from within, further developing our in-house skill and talent.
