    Electrical: Substation MS1 Upgrades

    Project Background

Substation No. 1 was built around 1892 and is located at 29 Queen Street in the North Block district of downtown Kingston. Today it is owned and operated by Kingston Hydro and distributes electricity to the downtown core of the City of Kingston at 44kV and 5kV (4.16/2.4kV).

The building in which Substation No. 1 resides and the surrounding North Block district have played an important role in the supply of heat, light and power to the citizens of Kingston for over 120 years.  The Public Utilities Commission used Substation No. 1 and the adjoining buildings as their main offices until 1972, when they moved to 1211 John Counter Boulevard.

The last major upgrade to Substation No. 1 was initiated in the 1950s and has established the facilities current operational layout. At the present time, Substation No.1 has a theoretical 5kV capacity of 18 MVA from six 3 MVA water-cooled transformers.

    Design and Construction

This is a multi-year project that will be paced and will focus on design and remediation work in preparation for the major capital expenditures in 2020-2021 when major structural and electrical upgrades to the 44kV East Bus are planned.

In 2016, we progressed on a multi-year project that focuses on design and remediation work in preparation for major capital expenditures in 2020-2021, when major structural and electrical upgrades to 44 kV equipment are planned. Design work during the year focused on engineering studies and design of 5kV electrical protection system upgrades. These protection systems reduce the risk of damage due to electrical faults by detecting abnormal conditions and isolating faulty sections of the electrical distribution system from the rest of the energized system.  Remediation work was focused on roof replacement.

For 2017, we are continuing to advance design and remediation work in preparation for major capital expenditures in 2020-2021. Design work this year is focused on engineering studies and design of 44kV electrical protection system upgrades.  Remedation work is focused on repairs to the North Wall of the substation.

    Schedule and Project Downloads

2017 - 2019: Repairs to the exterior North Wall of Substation MS1 and 44kV bus protection upgrades will be undertaken.

2020 - 2021: Structural, Mechanical and Electrical Upgrades to the interior 44kV East Bus of Substation MS1 will be undertaken.
