Utilities Kingston will conduct fog testing of the sanitary sewer system in the area of Hickson and Hagerman Ave. We have received complaints of sewer smells in this neighbourhood, and fog testing can help us identify the possible cause.

This testing is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 17 between 8 AM and 4 PM. Pending weather and operational factors, the alternate date is Friday, October 18 between 8 AM and 5 PM.

This testing will involve opening and entering maintenance holes in the streets and other public utility easements. A non-toxic fog will be used in these tests. The fog is manufactured for this purpose, leaves no residuals or stains, and has no effect on plant or animal life. The fog has a distinctive  odour. Where there is adequate ventilation, visibility and odour lasts only a few minutes.

Because the plumbing appliances in your house or building are connected to the sanitary sewer system, some fog may enter your home or place of business. This could happen if the following is true:

  • Vents connected to your building’s sewer pipes are inadequate, defective, or improperly installed.
  • Traps under sinks, tubs, basins, showers and other drains are dry, defective, improperly installed, or missing.
  • Pipes, connections and seals of the wastewater drain system in and under your buildings are damaged, defective, have plugs missing, or are improperly installed.

If you smell or see the fog in your house or building during the testing, please contact a member of the fog testing crew working in your area. The crew member will then help determine where the fog is entering your building.

Did you know? If fog can enter your building, sewer gases and odours may also enter. Your internal plumbing may need to be corrected. Should you have any questions, please contact the individuals named on your hand-delivered notice, or contact customer service by calling 613-546-0000, Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM.
