Correct illegal connections to the sanitary sewer, with assistance from Preventative Plumbing Program

If you have a basement, it’s at risk of flooding and sewer back-ups – even if it’s never flooded before. This fall, Utilities Kingston reminds property owners to disconnect illegal plumbing connections to the sanitary sewer. These connections contribute to the overall risk of basement flooding. Homeowners may qualify for financial assistance through the Preventative Plumbing Program.

Property owners are responsible for their connection to the municipal system (under Bylaw 2008-192, the “Sewer Use Bylaw”) and should check downspout, sump pump and foundation drainage to make sure it complies with the Sewer Use Bylaw.

Ensure you:

  • Disconnect downspouts that enter the ground and flow into the sanitary sewer. Direct these downspouts elsewhere. The lawn is usually the best spot, at least two metres away from your foundation.
  • Direct your sump pump drain to your lawn/garden, two metres away from your home. It must not pump into the sanitary lateral or your sanitary plumbing.
  • Direct your foundation drainage (weeping tile) so it is captured by a sump pump and not pumped into sanitary plumbing.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE IS AVAILABLE

Homeowners: get up to $3,000 to install sump pumps, backwater sanitary valves, foundation drains and other eligible measures. Utilities Kingston still has financial assistance available to its customers through the 2018 Preventative Plumbing Program. Customers are encouraged to act today, leaving time to implement plumbing measures before the end of the calendar year.

This program helps home owners take measures to better protect their homes from flooding and sewage back-ups – and comply with the City’s Sewer Use By-law.
