Annual sanitary sewer cleaning & inspection begins

Utilities Kingston conducts sewer cleaning and closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection in order to help maintain the integrity of the municipal sanitary sewer. This initiative helps ensure the continued reliability of the wastewater collection system.

Starting early May, our contractor, M.Cudd Infrastructure will undertake work in central and north Kingston. View a map of the area.

The following is a brief overview of the project:

  • Sewer cleaning: this is accomplished by multiple passes of a high-pressured jet. Scoured materials are flushed, captured, and removed from the sewer and properly disposed.
  • Sewer inspection: this is accomplished a short time later by running a robotic CCTV camera through the sewer main. The camera documents the condition of the sewer and adds to our condition assessment database for future capital planning. See our Youtube video

What to expect

The majority of work will not interrupt services or otherwise disrupt homeowners. If your home is within the work area, our contractor will hand-deliver a seven-day advanced notice to you.

If you're within focused areas of flushing and CCTV camera work, we ask that you keep toilet lids closed when not being used and pour approximately two litres of water into basement floor drains. This should reduce the chances of potential spillage, odours or noise generated by the work.

If you experience any issues related to sewage and believe it may be related to this project, follow the instructions on the noticed hand-delivered to your home.
